Twenty-six

Wymarre, Winter, 814 FF

I think Poxy is cute," Vera chirped.

Wizkand had already decided that she was far too cheerful for such an early hour. They'd only been on the road for half an hour, but she was already singing and attempting to strike up a lively conversation with the irritable calbrin. She was clearly no longer plagued by the aches and soreness that now haunted Wizkand after a day astride the docile pony.

"Poxy the foxy pony!" She giggled and grinned down at the aging wizard. "She was worth those barrettes, don't you think, Wizzy?" He intentionally yawned in her direction, but only received another giggle for his efforts to express his groggy state. "Wow! I didn't think you could get grumpier. Yet, here I sit, corrected."

"Your Majesty . . ."

"Yes, Master Wizard?" she replied quickly to his warning tone. "I hope the oldest and wisest master of my court is not about to advise me to sour my mood to match his."

He raised a surprised brow at her mirthful threat and eventually chuckled at her brazenness. "Very well, Your Majesty. Your point is made. I shall endeavor to alter my mood to suit yours."

"Very good!" She smiled down at him, then turned her gaze forward. "Okay, so I think I can pay better attention today. I need for you to help me understand the workings of Faiden's defenses. I know next to nothing about the magical warding of my kingdom, and I may need them to defeat the dark lord if I have to fall back."

Wizkand cast her another surprised look, both at her tone and at the wisdom of her words. She understood her situation far more than he gave her credit for. He cleared his throat and considered her request, trying to deice what information would be most pertinent to her quest and in what order to teach them. To his relief, she quietly hummed to herself and gave him time to reflect. "Okay, I should start with the basics, I believe." He nodded decisively. "The center of all of Faiden's defenses was the Cerulean Crystal."

Vera frowned slightly. "I thought the Cerulean Crystal was the heart of the Cerulean Palace?"

"Well, yes. It was both," he corrected. "It was the pseudo-sentient intelligence and source of power for the palace as well as the orchestrator and fuel for most of the kingdom's protections. It was essentially everything . . . a phenomenally powerful tool that never seemed to exhaust its supply of energy combined with a child-like intelligence so complex that it easily maintained the massive palace's every activity as well as the intricate layers of protection over Cerulia, Apex, and Faiden."

"Oh. Okay. So, where is it now?" She frowned down at him. "Please tell me the dark lord does not have it."

Wizkand looked up at her, his eyes wide. "I keep forgetting that you do not remember." His gave fell to the reins, his tone significantly more somber. "Sorry, Your Majesty. No, he did not acquire the crystal."

Vera looked away from him, her expression falling at the haunted look in his eyes.
